Recommended gear for working out
Whether you believe in evolution or a higher power, humans were not designed with shoes on our feet and especially not with heels that change the way we react to ground contact.
Traditional workout shoes with cushion and a higher heel changes the way we load our muscles and make it harder for our feet to work the way they’re supposed to. When doing squats or kettlebell swings in traditional running shoes or sneakers, the angle of the ankle puts more load onto the hip flexors and quads instead of the hamstrings and gluteal muscles targeted and in turn can cause overcompensation in the lower back. When doing exercises that require balance, cushioned shoes impede the pressures the mechanoreceptors are supposed to feel on the bottom of the foot and can restrict some of the small muscle movement and activation required for good balance.
Vivobarefoot shoes offer the benefits of working out barefoot without having the weird 5 finger toe shoes of Vibrams. Theres a bigger toe box so your toes don’t feel squashed together. The 2mm sole offer protection without restricting any range of motion and allows you to feel all the ground contact you’re supposed to feel.
I recommend watching the shoespiracy videos to get a better understanding of the benefits of zero drop, minimalistic shoes

2.Brazyn Collapsible Foam Roller
Portable myofascial solution that folds flat to fit in a carry-on
If you’ve started to train with me, I hope you’ve seen the benefits of self myofascial release using foam rollers or lacrosse balls. Whether it’s working on range of motion or recovering from a strain/cramp, myofascial release is a solution that doesn’t receive the recognition it deserves.
Any foam roller will work but the Brazyn will slide under your couch if you have limited space in your apartment and is folds small enough to bring with you on any business trip or get-a-way.
Brazyn Foam Roller on Amazon.com
If you have the space and portability isn’t an issue, any hard foam roller will do and you don’t need to spend 50$ for a good roller.
321 Strong Roller on Amazon.com
This is a 26.99USD (at time of post) solution that works just as well and has difference surface areas to target your muscles if it’s too sensitive or if you moved past a more forgiving foam roller.
3.Lacrosse ball/Yoga Tune up balls
More acute and more portable than foam rollers to target tight shoulders for neck pain, lower back and hamstrings
The Yoga Tune up Alpha ball is my personal go to for tight back muscles and shoulder recovery and warm up. Whenever I travel anywhere whether it’s a weekend trip for fun or for the military, you’ll always find a lacrosse ball and brazyn roller in my carry-on.
You can find lacrosse balls for 3-5USD at most Athletic retailers or Amazon.

4.Theragun Elite
Take recovery to the next level with a percussive massager.
Although percussive massagers activate the same part of the muscle to help relax and loosen up as a foam roller and lacrosse ball, a percussive massager can really bring your prep and recovery to the next level by simultaneously flushing out extra cellular fluid from your muscles and overstimulate the skin to activate and warm up your muscles to prevent overuse cramping and muscle spasms.
Theragun Elite is the best option for self use for a number of reasons. The handle design takes in ergonomics much better making self use much easier. It’s overbuilt to last a long time of abuse. I’ve had the same Theragun G3 at home for almost 3 years now and it still works perfect. I’ve tried a few other percussive massagers and most fail or break after 2 months.
